Rejected Brand Systems for Detail
Detail is an AI bug finder that does deep sans of your codebase to find serious bugs. Each scan spends a few hours exercising your code in creative ways to uncover bugs you’ll be glad to know about.

This case study covers 4 brand ideas that didn't make the cut for Detail. If you'd like to see the final brand, check out hex.inc/work/detail
Bug Zoo
The idea: make a technical illustrative system showing bugs in their truest, nastiest forms. We explain the product of finding and killing bugs using the "crosshair" motif. A playful blend of ascii + technical art with isometric illustrations.
Playful Algorithms
A big inspiration for Detail was showing something getting scanned or completed; the idea of a system starting from state 0 and turning to state 1. Off to on; noise to signal. With playful algorithms, we show this idea using a range of illustrations and patterns. The language is meant to evoke joy and feel like a fun, lightweight project despite doing gruelling error-finding work.
Fractal Systems
Fractal Systems explored the idea of showing a sorting algorithm in a more scalable visual format. Each file tree represents a code base getting scanned; the green shows you progress on how far along you are.
Ascii
Dev tool, technical audience; you gotta give ascii a shot. We were certain that it would be hard to come up with a novel and ownble brand system that relied fully on ascii, but this exploration helped get a low hanging identity concept out the way. We found some interesting inspiration in showing different layouts within the constraints of ascii (pricing tables, product diagrams), and were able to find a scanning motif using ascii building blocks.
Final Thoughts
We explored 3 more identity concepts that ended up not making the cut here. Detail was an extremely fun project that allowed us to explore a ton of exciting ideas.

At the end, we moved forward with a sorting algorithm system since it was instantly differentiated and explained the core product really clearly. You can view the case study on the final brand here: hex.inc/work/detail

This is a new format for us to show more of our work to the world; hopefully it helped bring some extra insight into how we think about brand building.
